A Special Lecture On ‘Students and Culture of Reading’ and Book Exhibition organized at M M Modi College, Patiala

Multani Mal Modi College, Patiala today organized a special lecture on the topic, ‘Students and the Culture of Reading’ as part of the week-long celebrations of Modi Jayanti to engage them with relevance of good literature in their future success. The Post-graduate Department of Punjabi and English Department of the college in collaboration with the Publication Bureau, Punjabi University, Patiala and with support of Sahitya Academy, New Delhi also organized a book – exhibition to promote the culture of reading. The special lecture on was delivered by Dr. Surjit Singh, Professor Incharge, Publication Bureau, Punjabi University, Patiala.
College Principal Dr. Khushvinder Kumar welcomed the speaker and said that there are immense transformations in the culture of reading texts due to emergence of new media technologies and complex digital texts and tools. He said that information or data is not the real knowledge and may not lead to wisdom until we consciously interpret it in the proper context and vision.
Dr. Gurdeep Singh, Head, Dept. of Punjabi formally introduced the guest speaker. He said that Dr. Surjit Singh is an authority on Punjabi literature and a thinker.
In his lecture, Dr. Surjit Singh shared different phases of his learning and reading experiences with the students. He motivated the students to read books thoroughly and said that books are the lighthouse of wisdom and knowledge. Citing many classical texts of poetry and philosophy he elaborated the importance of inter-contextual interpretations of these texts and said that word is the originator of our civilization. He also discussed with them the methods and significance of being disciplined in selection and reading of books.
There was an interaction between the students and the main speaker after the lecture. Dr. Surjit Singh and Principal Dr. Khushvinder Kumar also formally inaugurated the book exhibition. This book exhibition was organized to provide classical texts on nominal rates to the students by Publication Bureau, Punjabi University, Patiala and Sahitya Academy, New Delhi. Students and teachers purchased books on different subjects in Punjabi, Hindi, English and Urdu. The stage was conducted by Dr. Deepak Dhlewa. The lecture was also attended by Dr. Veerpal Kaur, Prof. Amandeep Kaur, Prof. Gurpreet Kaur, Prof. Jagjot Singh, Prof. Arshpreet Kaur and Dr. Gurjant Singh and 150 students were also present.
The vote of thanks was presented by Dr. Gurdeep Singh Sandhu. A memento was also presented to the guest speaker.

ਸਥਾਨਕ ਮੁਲਤਾਨੀ ਮੱਲ ਮੋਦੀ ਕਾਲਜ, ਪਟਿਆਲਾ ਦੇ ਪੋਸਟ-ਗ੍ਰੈਜੂਏਟ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਅੱਜ ਮੋਦੀ-ਜੈਅੰਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਰਪਿਤ ਚੱਲ ਰਹੇ ਸੱਤ-ਰੋਜ਼ਾ ਪ੍ਰੋਗਰਾਮਾਂ ਦੀ ਲੜ੍ਹੀ ਦੇ ਸੰਦਰਭ ਵਿੱਚ ‘ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀ ਅਤੇ ਪੁਸਤਕ-ਸੱਭਿਆਚਾਰ’ ਵਿਸ਼ੇ ‘ਤੇ ਇੱਕ ਵਿਸ਼ੇਸ਼ ਭਾਸ਼ਣ ਕਰਵਾਇਆ ਗਿਆ ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਉਦੇਸ਼ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਪੁਸਤਕਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾਉਣ ਲਈ ਉਤਸ਼ਾਹਿਤ ਕਰਨਾ ਸੀ।ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਇਲਾਵਾ ਕਾਲਜ ਦੇ ਅੰਗਰੇਜ਼ੀ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਅਤੇ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਵਿਭਾਗਾਂ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਪਬਲੀਕੇਸ਼ਨ ਬਿਊਰੋ, ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ, ਪਟਿਆਲਾ ਅਤੇ ਭਾਰਤੀ ਸਾਹਿਤ ਅਕਾਦਮੀ, ਦਿੱਲੀ ਦੇ ਸਹਿਯੋਗ ਨਾਲ ਇੱਕ ਪੁਸਤਕ ਪ੍ਰਦਰਸ਼ਨੀ ਦਾ ਆਯੋਜਨ ਵੀ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ।ਇਸ ਭਾਸ਼ਣ ਦੇ ਮੁੱਖ ਵਕਤਾ ਵਜੋਂ ਡਾ. ਸੁਰਜੀਤ ਸਿੰਘ, ਪ੍ਰੋਫੈਸਰ ਇੰਚਾਰਜ, ਪਬਲੀਕੇਸ਼ਨ ਬਿਊਰੋ, ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ, ਪਟਿਆਲਾ ਸ਼ਾਮਲ ਹੋਏ।
ਮੁੱਖ ਵਕਤਾ ਦਾ ਸਵਾਗਤ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਕਾਲਜ ਪ੍ਰਿੰਸੀਪਲ ਡਾ. ਖੁਸ਼ਵਿੰਦਰ ਕੁਮਾਰ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਪੜਣ੍ਹ ਅਤੇ ਸਿੱਖਣ ਦੇ ਢੰਗ-ਤਰੀਕਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਤਬਦੀਲੀਆਂ ਆ ਰਹੀਆ ਹਨ। ਉਹਨਾਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਜਾਣਕਾਰੀ ਜਾਂ ਡਾਟਾ ਦਾ ਭੰਡਾਰ ਤਦ ਤੱਕ ਗਿਆਨ ਜਾਂ ਬੌਧਿਕਤਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਤਬਦੀਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ ਜਦ ਤੱਕ ਅਸੀਂ ਇਸ ਦੀ ਸਹੀ ਸੰਦਰਭ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਿਆਖਿਆ ਕਰਨ ਦੇ ਯੋਗ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਜਿਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਪੁਸਤਕਾਂ ਦੀ ਭੂਮਿਕਾ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਧ ਅਹਿਮ ਹੈ
ਵਕਤਾ ਦੀ ਰਸਮੀ ਜਾਣ-ਪਛਾਣ ਕਰਵਾਉਂਦਿਆਂ ਡਾ. ਗੁਰਦੀਪ ਸਿੰਘ ਸੰਧੂ, ਮੁਖੀ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਡਾ. ਸੁਰਜੀਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਸਾਹਿਤ ਅਤੇ ਸੱਭਿਆਚਾਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਪ੍ਰਪੱਕ ਵਿਦਵਾਨ ਹੋਣ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ-ਨਾਲ ਇੱਕ ਆਦਰਸ਼ ਅਧਿਆਪਕ ਅਤੇ ਸਮਾਜ ਲਈ ਪ੍ਰੇਰਨਾ ਸਰੋਤ ਵੀ ਹਨ।
ਆਪਣੇ ਭਾਸ਼ਣ ਵਿੱਚ ਡਾ. ਸੁਰਜੀਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਤਾਬਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਜੁੜਨ ਦਾ ਸੱਦਾ ਦਿੰਦਿਆਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੀਆਂ ਦੁਸ਼ਵਾਰੀਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਜੂਝਦਿਆਂ ਵੀ ਗਿਆਨ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤੀ ਦੀ ਚਿਣਗ ਜਗਦੀ ਰੱਖਣੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ ਹੈ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨੂੰ ਮਨੁੱਖੀ ਸੱਭਿਅਤਾ ਦਾ ਮੂਲ-ਮੰਤਰ ਦੱਸਦਿਆ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਅਜੋਕੇ ਦੌਰ ਵਿੱਚ ‘ਸੋਚਣਾ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਹੈ’? ਦਾ ਸਵਾਲ ਗੁੰਝਲਦਾਰ ਬਣ ਚੁੱਕਿਆ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਪੁਸਤਕ-ਸੱਭਿਆਚਾਰ ਹੀ ਹੱਲ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ।ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਆਧੁਨਿਕ ਤਕਨੀਕੀ ਤਬਦੀਲੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਮੱਦੇ-ਨਜ਼ਰ ਪੁਸਤਕਾਂ ਪੜ੍ਹਣ ਦੇ ਰੁਝਾਣਾਂ ਬਾਰੇ ਵੀ ਚਰਚਾ ਕੀਤੀ।
ਇਸ ਪ੍ਰੋਗਰਾਮ ਦਾ ਮੰਚ ਸੰਚਾਲਨ ਡਾ. ਦੀਪਕ ਧਲੇਵਾਂ ਨੇ ਬਾਖੂਬੀ ਨਿਭਾਇਆ।
ਇਸ ਮੌਕੇ ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰੋ. ਵੀਰਪਾਲ ਕੌਰ,ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਵਿਭਾਗ, ਪ੍ਰੋ ਅਮਨਦੀਪ ਕੌਰ, ਪ੍ਰੋ. ਗੁਰਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਕੌਰ, ਪ੍ਰੋ. ਜਗਜੋਤ ਸਿੰਘ, ਪ੍ਰੋ. ਅਰਸ਼ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਕੌਰ, ਪ੍ਰੋ.ਵੀਰਪਾਲ ਕੌਰ, ਡਾ. ਗੁਰਜੰਟ ਸਿੰਘ, ਅਤੇ 150 ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀ ਸ਼ਾਮਲ ਸਨ। ਡਾ.ਗੁਰਦੀਪ ਸਿੰਘ ਸੰਧੂ ਨੇ ਇਸ ਮੌਕੇ ਤੇ ਧੰਨਵਾਦ ਦਾ ਮਤਾ ਪੇਸ਼ ਕੀਤਾ। ਮੁੱਖ ਮਹਿਮਾਨ ਨੂੰ ਯਾਦ ਚਿੰਨ੍ਹ ਦੇ ਕੇ ਸਨਮਾਨਿਤ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ।
ਇਸ ਮੌਕੇ ਤੇ ਡਾ. ਸੁਰਜੀਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਅਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਿੰਸੀਪਲ ਡਾ. ਖੁਸ਼ਵਿੰਦਰ ਕੁਮਾਰ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਕਾਲਜ ਵਿੱਚ ਲਗਾਈ ਗਈ ਪੁਸਤਕ ਪ੍ਰਦਰਸ਼ਨੀ ਦਾ ਰਸਮੀ ਉਦਘਾਟਨ ਵੀ ਕੀਤਾ। ਇਸ ਪੁਸਤਕ ਪ੍ਰਦਰਸ਼ਨੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਜਿੱਥੇ ਭਾਰਤੀ ਸਾਹਿਤ ਅਕਾਦਮੀ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ਿਤ ਕੀਤਾ ਉੱਚ ਮਿਆਰੀ ਸਾਹਿਤ ਉਪਲਬਧ ਕਰਵਾਇਆ ਗਿਆ ਉੱਥੇ ਪਬਲੀਕੇਸ਼ਨ ਬਿਊਰੋ, ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ, ਪਟਿਆਲਾ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਵੱਖ-ਵੱਖ ਵਿਸ਼ੇ ਦੀਆਂ ਕਿਤਾਬਾਂ ਤੇ ਢੁੱਕਵੀਆਂ ਛੋਟਾਂ ਦੇ ਕੇ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਉਤਸ਼ਾਹਿਤ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ। ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀਆਂ, ਅਧਿਆਪਕਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਕਾਲਜ ਸਟਾਫ਼ ਵਿੱਚ ਅੰਗਰੇਜ਼ੀ, ਹਿੰਦੀ, ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਅਤੇ ਉਰਦੂ ਦੀਆਂ ਕਿਤਾਬਾਂ ਖਰੀਦਣ ਲਈ ਭਾਰੀ ਉਤਸ਼ਾਹ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਗਿਆ।
